DOX Production's "Nuclear Nightmares" announced as Grierson Award Finalist

DOX Productions’ film, Nuclear Nightmares, revisiting Chernobyl twenty years on, and first broadcast on BBC2’s Horizon in July 2006, has been long-listed for the prestigious Grierson awards. The film is directed by Nick Davidson and was commissioned for the BBC by Andrew Cohen. The Times, in reviewing the film, wrote that ‘this may be one of the most important programmes Horizon has made.’

Producer, Steffi Kern, said of the film, ‘Few things evoke more fear than radiation. I wanted to get to the bottom of whether our nuclear nightmares are based on reality?’

‘For twenty years scientists have been studying the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster for people and wildlife,’ said Executive Producer, David Sington. ‘What they have found contradicts many common beliefs about the effects of radiation. As this film reveals, leading scientists are now questioning the assumptions that have for decades governed their thinking about the dangers of radiation.’

Project Poltergeist, filmed by Clive North and edited by Adam Finch, has already been a finalist for Best Television Programme on a Science Subject at the 2007 ABSW Awards.

DOX Productions’ film Project Poltergeist is a previous winner of the Grierson. Project Poltergeist, transmitted on BBC’s Horizon in March 2004 and, as “The Ghost Particle” on WGBH/NOVA in February 2006, won the award in 2004. The film, described in the Times as “rather wonderful and profound,” tells the story of how scientists tunneled deep into the Earth to build a trap for the most elusive particle in Nature – the neutrino.
